How the levels are graded

A sudoku with fewer given numbers is not always harder. What makes a puzzle hard is the kind of reasoning you need. So every puzzle here is solved by a step-by-step program that only uses techniques a person would use, always trying the simplest one first. The hardest technique it needed decides the level.

Sudoku levels on this site
LevelGiven numbersMedianTechniques needed
Easy36–4038Naked and hidden singles only
Medium30–3531Singles plus naked or hidden pairs, pointing pairs and box/line reduction
Hard26–3128All of the above plus naked or hidden triples or an X-Wing
Expert24–2828Swordfish or XY-Wing, or longer chains that go beyond the techniques the grader knows

Given numbers measured on 1000 generated puzzles per level (October 15, 2026). The level comes from which techniques a step-by-step solver needs, not from the count of given numbers.

Why every puzzle has one answer

Every puzzle has exactly one solution. The generator starts from a complete, valid grid and removes numbers in symmetric pairs. After each removal a solver counts the solutions and stops at two; if a removal would allow a second solution, the number goes back.

That matters on paper. With two possible answers you reach a point where you must guess, and the answer key may not match a correct grid you filled in. With one answer, every number can be found by logic.

Puzzle codes

Each puzzle gets a short code such as #E-48213. The letter is the level (E easy, M medium, H hard, X expert, K and S for the 4×4 and 6×6 kids grids) and the number picks the puzzle. Type a code into "Open code" and you get the same puzzle and the same answer again, on any device.

Ways to use it

  • A week of puzzles: choose 6 per page and 2 pages to get 12 puzzles, or try the daily sudoku.
  • For a parent or grandparent: the large print page puts one puzzle on each sheet with big digits.
  • For a class: one page with 4 puzzles, copied for every pupil, and the answer page for you.
  • For children: the 4×4 and 6×6 sudoku use numbers or pictures.
  • Make your own: print a blank grid.

Print uses your browser’s print window, where you can also pick "Save as PDF". Download PDF builds the file in your browser: vector lines and text, so it stays sharp at any size and prints fast.

Frequently asked questions

How many clues does an easy sudoku have?

On this site an easy sudoku has 36 to 40 given numbers, measured on 1000 generated puzzles. More important than the count is that every easy puzzle can be finished with naked and hidden singles only, so you never need advanced techniques.

Does every sudoku have one solution?

A proper sudoku does, and every puzzle made here is checked for it. A solver counts the solutions after each number is removed and stops as soon as it finds two. Puzzles from other sources sometimes have several answers, which forces guessing.

Can I print sudoku for free?

Yes. The generator, the PDF download and the answer keys are free, with no account and no sign-up. The puzzles are made in your browser and nothing is sent to a server, so you can print as many as you like.

How many sudoku puzzles fit on one page?

Choose 1, 2, 4 or 6. One per page gives the biggest grid and the most room for pencil notes. Four per page is a common choice for a puzzle booklet, and six per page saves the most paper but has small cells.

Can I get the same puzzle again?

Yes. Every puzzle has a code such as #M-01234, printed above the grid. Type it into Open code and the generator rebuilds exactly the same puzzle and answer, because the code is the seed for the generator.

Do I need to install anything?

No. The generator runs in any modern browser on a computer, tablet or phone. On a phone you can download the PDF and share it to a printer app or save it for later. JavaScript must be turned on.
